On the second day of the Kananaskis Summit, the "G8 Africa Action Plan" was adopted, in which the G8 expressed their consolidated support for African nations, which are tackling economic development on their own initiatives. Afterwards, the G8 leaders held a meeting with African leaders and Secretary-General Kofi Annan of the United Nations and explained the content of the plan. The African leaders in attendance also welcomed the plan.

Thereafter, as Chair of the Summit, Prime Minister Jean Chretien of Canada announced the Chair's Summary, and the Kananaskis Summit was brought to a close.

The Chair's Summary includes following agreements among G8 leaders, in addition to the "G8 Africa Action Plan"; the implementation of projects to support Russia's efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; the implementation of cooperative action on transport security for anti-terrorism measures; the promotion of the Middle East peace process based on the establishment of a Palestinian state; the necessity of a sustained dialogue between India and Pakistan; educational support toward developing countries; and the importance of strong political leadership for the success of economic reforms.

At a press conference, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi stated, "I explained my unwavering policy for economic revitalization, tax reform and deregulation, which was highly appreciated by the leaders of other G8 countries."

In addition, Prime Minister Koizumi held a Japan-Russia Summit Meeting with President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation. At the meeting, the two leaders agreed that Prime Minister Koizumi will pay an official visit to the Russian Federation sometime between December of this year and January 2003, in response to the invitation from President Putin, and they will formulate a "Japan-Russia Action Plan," setting goals for achievements in various areas when the Prime Minister visits the Russian Federation. They also agreed to promote efforts for exchanges as the 2003 "Japan Year in Russia."
