First Day of the Kananaskis Summit
Wednesday, June 26, 2002
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended the Kananaskis Summit, held in Canada.
The first day of the Summit opened with a meeting of the G7 leaders, in which Russia does not take part. At the meeting, the leaders agreed on the strengthening of assistance to Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPCs) that are concentrated in Africa, and on the provision of funds for Russian's efforts on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.
The G8 Summit Meeting was held in the afternoon, and in light of the meeting with the G7 leaders that morning, the "G8 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction" was agreed upon as a maintenance plan for nuclear non-proliferation in Russia. Prime Minister Koizumi expressed that Japan will contribute US$200 million for this plan. In addition, it was decided that full participation of Russia in the Summit will be realized, and that Russia will host the Summit in 2006. As an anti-terrorism measure, the "Cooperative G8 Action on Transport Security" was also compiled as a program of action for securing the safety of land, sea and air transport.
Moreover, Prime Minister Koizumi held a Japan-U.K. Summit Meeting with Prime Minister Tony Blair prior to the opening of the Summit Meetings. At the meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on the bilateral relationship between Japan and the U.K. and on measures for assistance to Africa. Prime Minister Blair also expressed his support for the reform track of the Koizumi Administration. |
