United Nations Youth Ambassadors Pay Courtesy Call on Prime Minister
Friday, March 15, 2002
Seven United Nations Youth Ambassadors paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
The Youth Ambassadors aim to publicize the United Nations Designated International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26) and to contribute toward drug abuse prevention both in Japan and abroad. They were selected from youth volunteers in Japan, who participated in a campaign to support the projects for drug abuse prevention activities in developing countries, through raising funds for United Nations activities. The seven high-school students will be sent to Vienna to present contributions collected to the United Nations International Drug Control Program.
A representative of the Youth Ambassadors stated their commitment to fulfill their role with pride at being selected for such an honorable post and through exchanges in Vienna and other activities, to cultivate within themselves an international perspective and contribute to the campaign after returning to Japan. In response, Prime Minister Koizumi shook hands with each Youth Ambassador and encouraged them, stating, "I am sure that you will be able to learn a great deal, so please do your best." |
