The Hundredth Meeting of the Security Council
Tuesday, November 20, 2001
A meeting of the Security Council (100th meeting) was held in the National Diet Building, attended by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and relevant Cabinet members. The meeting discussed a proposal concerning the implementation of international peace cooperation activities by the Self-Defense Forces units as its agenda and approved the proposal. The current Law Concerning Cooperation for United Nations Peacekeeping Operations and Other Operations places certain limits on duties performed by SDF in support of United Nations peacekeeping operations, until such a time a future decision is made by laws. These suspended duties include the monitoring of disarmament, stationing in buffer zones and collection and disposal of weapons that have been surrendered or abandoned. Today, this Council agreed to make an amendment on the existing law and lift the freeze on the implementation of the said duties. |
