A Nuclear Energy Disaster Prevention Drill was conducted at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
This was the second drill to be conducted, following the first one undertaken last year in Shimane Prefecture. For the purposes of the drill, it was assumed that an accident had occurred at a nuclear energy plant in Hokkaido and there was a danger that radioactive material could be released outside of the plant. In response, a series of measures were taken, including steps to ensure the safety of the local residents.
Immediately following the initiation of the drill, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi convened a meeting of relevant Cabinet ministers at the Crisis Management Center in the Prime Minister's Official Residence. Under the direction of Prime Minister Koizumi and the concerned Cabinet ministers, a Declaration of Nuclear Emergency Situation was issued and efforts were made to confirm the situation in the disaster area through a video conference.
This was followed by a meeting of the Headquarters for Nuclear Energy Disaster Control at which the relevant ministries reported on the responses being implemented, and the necessary Government policies were decided.
