Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi made a one-day visit to the People's Republic of China to meet with President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji.

Prior to the meetings the Prime Minister visited the Marco Polo Bridge located in the outskirts of Beijing, the site of the 1937 clash that triggered the Sino-Japanese War, as well as the Memorial Hall of Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japan.

The Summit Meeting with Premier Zhu Rongji was held at Yang Yuan Zhai in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. During the meeting the leaders exchanged views on the retaliation attacks conducted by the United States of America and the United Kingdom in Afghanistan earlier that day (Japan time), the issue of visits to Yasukuni Shrine, the issue of history textbooks in Japan and other matters. Furthermore, Prime Minister Koizumi explained the various support measures for anti-terrorism activities taken by Japan, including the dispatch of personnel of the Self-Defense Forces, and sought to gain the understanding of China for these measures.

In the following meeting with President Jiang Zemin, there was an exchange of views on the international situation following the series of terrorist attacks in the United States, current relations between Japan and China and other matters.
