Meeting of the National Security Council

A meeting of the Security Council was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting a decision was made on the dispatch of a Self-Defense Forces transport units to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. In addition, the Council approved Japan's response measures to the International Approach to Preventing and Eradicating International Terrorism and the mobilization of guard duties by the Self-Defense Forces.

At the Cabinet Meeting held immediately after the Council meeting the Anti-Terrorism Special Measure Bill (draft) was approved.

In an interview after the Cabinet Meeting, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi stated, "This is a matter of how Japan is to respond to a new situation, and for that reason I think that this is an extremely important bill. It is a bill that will determine how positively Japan can tackle the issue together with the international community."
