Dispatch of International Peace Cooperation Team

Ceremonies were held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence to hand over relief goods to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and to report that an International Peace Cooperation team will be dispatched to Pakistan to help Afghan refugees in there.

First, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi handed a list of Japan's relief aid to the regional representative for Japan and the Republic of Korea of the UNHCR Kasidis Rochanakorn. There then followed the announcement of the dispatch of the peace cooperation teams and Prime Minister Koizumi offered encouragement to the members of the teams.

This dispatch followed a decision in the meeting of the Security Council of Japan held on the same day.

On the request of the UNHCR, the peace cooperation team will supply tents and blankets for refugees from Afghanistan, and these relief supplies will be transported to Pakistan by Air Self-Defense Force planes.
