Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with President of the Republic of South Africa
Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
During the meeting Prime Minister Koizumi re-affirmed Japan's policy speech on Africa, made by then Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori during his visit to South Africa, in which he declared "There will be no stability and prosperity in the world in the twenty-first century unless the problems of Africa are solved. "
President Mbeki expressed gratitude for Japan's policy of supporting Africa, specifically mentioning the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process. Prime Minister Koizumi responded that he had great expectations for continued development of the Republic of South Africa under the distinguished leadership of President Mbeki.
Furthermore, the two leaders agreed on the Japan South Africa Joint Communique, in which they decided to launch negotiations for concluding a science and technology cooperation pact. The leaders also agreed that both countries would cooperate on the various issues facing the international community, beginning with terrorism. |
