The first meeting between the Government and the Japanese Trade Union Confederation in about two years was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. Chairman Etsuya Washio of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation handed Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi a written request which called for, among other things, the urgent creation of employment in the fields of social welfare and nursing care by means of establishing a fund for urgent employment measures, an extension of the period of eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits, and the urgent establishment of a system for developing human resources. Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "I am happy to have a chance to meet with the Japanese Trade Union Confederation. It is of great importance that the structural reforms advance steadily. In continuing the reforms, I intend to take solid employment measures. |
