Prime Minister Koizumi presents President Chirac with a Noh mask
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held his first summit meeting with President Jacques Chirac of the French Republic in his office.
After his talks with Prime Minister Lionel Jospin the previous day, Prime Minister Koizumi had a lively exchange of views with President Chirac on a broad range of topics, including Japan-France relations, the Japanese economy and the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, overrunning the time initially scheduled.
Prime Minister Koizumi conveyed his plan to persist in his discussions toward the return of the United States to the Kyoto Protocol in order to enhance the effectiveness of global warming prevention. President Chirac reconfirmed his unchanged opinion that the early ratification of the Kyoto Protocol was essential, stating at the same time that he understood Japan's position.
Having concluded his visits to the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the French Republic, Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his impression of the trip, "I believe the meetings were held in a frank and congenial atmosphere. This experience is beneficial in promoting diplomatic negotiations and bilateral relations in the future."
Having concluded his entire agenda, Prime Minister Koizumi departed Paris for Japan in the late afternoon the same day (5 July Japan time). |
