After concluding summit meetings in the United States of America and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi arrived in the French Republic, the final country he would be visiting, on 3 July (4 July Japan time), whereupon a meeting was held with Prime Minister Lionel Jospin at his office.

The two leaders exchanged views on a variety of matters including bilateral relations, the Japanese economy, and the Kyoto Protocol concerning global warming.

With regard to the Kyoto Protocol, Prime Minister Koizumi elaborated the recognition that consultations must continue toward the United States' return. Prime Minister Jospin expressed the view that the early ratification of the Kyoto Protocol was essential and stated, "I too would like the United States to participate."

Prime Minister Jospin further noted strong expectations for the rebirth of the Japanese economy, affirming his hopes for the success of Prime Minister Koizumi's reforms.
