Saturday, June 30, 2001

After the close of the ordinary session of the Diet on 29 June, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi departed Japan to visit the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the French Republic. He arrived in the United States on the evening of 29 June local time (early morning of 30 June Japan time). The following day, Prime Minister Koizumi flew by helicopter from Washington DC to Camp David where he held his first summit meeting with President George W. Bush of the United States.

President Bush personally greeted Prime Minister Koizumi at Camp David. The summit meeting began in an amicable atmosphere, overrunning the time initially scheduled.

At the summit meeting, both leaders affirmed the importance of Japan-US relations and agreed on the importance of establishing a personal relationship of trust between them. In terms of specific agenda, the two leaders discussed matters relating to the Japan-US security arrangement, the issue of US bases in Okinawa, missile defense and Japan-US economic relations. The two leaders also exchanged a broad range of views on global issues, such as trade and environmental issues, including the Kyoto Protocol concerning global warming.

After the meeting, two statements were issued, "Partnership for Security and Prosperity" and "US-Japan Economic Partnership for Growth."
