The Special Public Institutions Reform Promotion Headquarters met for the first time at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the meeting, Minister of State for Administrative and Regulatory Reform Nobuteru Ishihara delivered the "Interim Report on the Review of Special Public Institutions." At the end of the meeting, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi stated, "reforming special public institutions will be the most effective way to build an efficient and streamlined government in the future. We should dispense with inefficient appropriation of taxpayers' money, and all that can be accomplished by the private sector should be left in its hands, and all that can be delegated to local governments should be delegated to them. This reform is the most important work in order to make these policies a reality." The Prime Minister further noted, "I would like to bring forward the drawing up of this plan, which is scheduled to take place sometime in FY2001, and formulate it within the calendar year. As such, I would request that you are active in your approaches. I want you to review the businesses of special public institutions from ground zero to boldly reduce fiscal expenditure." |
