The Council for Gender Equality held a meeting at the Prime Minister's Official Residence, at which chair of the investigative committee of specialists Keiko Higuchi, handed to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi the "Final Report of the Committee of Specialists on Measures to Help Parents Balance Work and Childcare." The final report's contents incorporated the following proposals: i) Reforming the work place in order that parents can balance work and childcare; ii) Operation to reduce the number of children waiting for daycare to zero - offering the best and widest services for minimum cost; iii) The provision of diverse and high quality childcare services; iv) Provision of an after-school child care program in all required areas; and v) Childcare with the involvement of the local community. In receiving the final report Prime Minister Koizumi remarked that he would work to realize a gender equal society in which work and childcare could be balanced.
