Pays Courtesy Call on Prime Minister


Former President George Bush of the United States of America paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. With regard to the Japan-US Summit Meeting scheduled to be held at the end of June, former President Bush stated, "President George W. Bush (his son) is anxiously looking forward to meeting with you. Camp David will provide an excellent setting for you to get acquainted with one another. President Bush is keenly aware of the importance of Japan-US relations." In response, Prime Minister Koizumi noted, "I spoke with President Bush on the telephone and was impressed by his extremely warm manner. I am looking forward to meeting with him. I indicated that Japan-US relations were of the utmost importance." The Prime Minister also stated, "the speech made by then President Bush at the time of the Gulf Crisis was superb and reminded me of Gary Cooper in 'High Noon.'"
