Meeting of the
Headquarters for Industrial Structural Reform
and Employment Measures

The Headquarters for Industrial Structural Reform and Employment Measures held its meeting in the National Diet Building. At the meeting it was decided that the Headquarters would conduct examination in the following four areas: (1) the creation of employment through the fostering of new markets and industries; (2) the promotion of personnel training and human resource development; (3) the establishment of a work environment in which people can work without worry, and (4) the establishment of an employment safety net that is suited to structural reforms in the labor market. At the end of the meeting Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi stated, "This meeting is an incredibly important means of giving a form to the spirit of the story of the hundred sacks of rice," and directed all persons concerned to actively tackle the issue designated for examination within the meeting.
It is planned that by sometime in June the Headquarters for Industrial Structural Reform and Employment Measures will have laid out a broad direction for reform, and it is expected that this broad direction will be refined into specific measures and a concrete schedule by September.
