Prime Minister Naoto Kan attended the Ceremony of Reverence at Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, held in the presence of Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino.

On this occasion, 1,689 remains which cannot be returned to their families were entombed at the Cemetery, among the remains of the war dead collected in Ioto, Eastern New Guinea, and other places by government-dispatched groups tasked with collecting the remains of the war dead.

Participants in the ceremony included Prime Minister Kan, Cabinet members, ambassadors to Japan, representatives from related organizations, and bereaved family members, all of whom paid their respects to the war dead.
