Prime Minister Naoto Kan held the fifth meeting of the Council for Intensive Discussion on Social Security Reform at the Prime Minister's Office.

Discussion took place on the proposals and opinions on social security presented by people from various sectors at public hearings conducted between February 2011 and April 2011, and on other occasions.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said, "Various opinions have been expressed today as well. When it comes to social security, I feel that more than anything, human relations are what give this topic meaning.
In consideration of this, I have had a range of discussions carried out on major issues of social security, giving due consideration to various views, especially those pertaining to the issue of how we can implement social security in a way that does not exclude the impoverished or weaker members of society. I ask that further efforts be made by this Council to draw up a package of proposals around June."
