Prime Minister Naoto Kan held a meeting of the Headquarters for Response to the New Zealand Earthquake at the Diet building.

 

Based on the reports of the situation presented to the meeting, the Prime Minister said, "I would like to offer my heartfelt sympathy to the victims and their families, and sincerely pray for the rescue of as many people as possible.
Presently, our rescue team in the country is working hard in cooperation with the New Zealand and Australian rescue units. The teams will not give up.
I would like to send a message to the rescue teams and those awaiting rescue: never lose hope."
