Prime Minister Naoto Kan visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and gave encouragement to the staff in charge of the response to the New Zealand earthquake.

The Prime Minister said, "I believe many of you must be working throughout the night in responding to the earthquake that occurred in New Zealand yesterday. Since the disaster has affected a large number of people, which include Japanese nationals, I am resolved that Japan should provide thorough assistance to this earthquake disaster.
Amidst this situation, I decided to pay a visit here today to thank everyone for your efforts at the frontline. I am sure there will be more busy days ahead. I would like you to exert the fullest efforts for the sake of the Japanese nationals, for New Zealand, and for the world."
