Prime Minister Naoto Kan held a meeting of the Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office.

Discussion took place on the acceleration of the formulation of the global standardization strategy and the enhancement thereof, among other matters.

The Prime Minister said in his opening address, "As sometimes described as the 'Galapagos Syndrome,' there has been a marked tendency that Japanese products are slow to be marketed abroad, despite their outstanding technologies, for their standards are too exclusively adapted to the domestic market to suit the global market. I expect to hear a report about this here today. I earnestly ask for your further efforts in the area of intellectual property."
