Prime Minister Naoto Kan delivered an address at the Presentation Ceremony of the "Food and Community Solidarity" Selection held at the Prime Minister's Office.

The ceremony was held with an aim to revitalize agriculture, forestry, and fishery industries, which produce food as the people's source of life, and rural and fishing villages that support the industries. Innovative projects for regional revitalization that capitalize on intra- and inter-regional networks were selected as pioneering best practices, which would then be introduced and encouraged around Japan.

The Prime Minister said in his address, "I believe there is a large potential in Japan's diverse assets of food product and culture, agriculture, and fisheries. I heard that many of your activities are aiming to involve young people in these fields. When thinking of the future of Japan's agriculture, although it may be necessary on the one hand to aim for large-scale efficient farming, on the other hand I think that community-centered agricultural activities are also important as they give people enjoyment and prompt them to protect nature while producing food for themselves."
