Prime Minister Naoto Kan held the third meeting of the Headquarters for the Abduction Issue at the Prime Minister's Office.

Discussion took place on the activities of the past year, the main opinions of the family members of the abductees, and the recent situation in North Korea.

The Prime Minister said in his opening address, "The abduction issue has been going on for many years. Moving forward, I will continue to make utmost efforts to ensure that the government follows through on its responsibility to realize the return of all abductees as early as possible. I decided to convene a meeting of the Headquarters in light of the significant changes taking place in North Korea, including preparations for transition of power. I look forward to having meaningful discussions on how to achieve a breakthrough on the abduction issue."
