Prime Minister Naoto Kan attended the general assembly of the regular members of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) held in Tokyo.

The Prime Minister said in his address, "I am determined to never allow the yen to abruptly change in value. Yesterday, a foreign exchange intervention operation was carried out for the first time in six and half years. I would like to reiterate here that, if necessary, firm actions will be taken again going forward.
Furthermore, the New Growth Strategy, which presents prescriptions to create new demand and employment, and restore vigor to Japan on the economic front, was compiled this June. What is needed above all to break through the longstanding stagnation and revitalize Japan is the return of a strong economy, and for this end the small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that sustain the foundation of the economy must regain vitality. I would like the government to provide solid support to SMEs, which buoy the revitalization of the Japanese economy, in close cooperation with the members of the JCCI present today."
