Prime Minister Naoto Kan received a courtesy call from Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Kan said that the participation of Director General Amano in the respective peace ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was an important contribution for reinforcing the international regime for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. In response, Director General Amano said that the IAEA, for its part, will continue its effort toward realizing a world without nuclear weapons.

The two leaders then exchanged views on the overall cooperative relationship between Japan and the IAEA, and Prime Minister Kan revealed the intention to support Director General Amano's initiatives as much as possible.
