Prime Minister Naoto Kan received a courtesy call from Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, at the Prime Minister's Office.

During the talks, Prime Minister Kan said, "I heartily welcome on behalf of the people of Japan your participation in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony. I heard that you will also visit Nagasaki. You will be the first Secretary-General of the United Nations to visit these cities and, as such, the visits hold great significance. I heard that you expressed your expectation for efforts to abolish nuclear weapons to be greatly advanced on this occasion, when Mr. John V. Roos, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Japan, will also be visiting.

On the issue of official development assistance (ODA), I received your request that Japan's assistance to these countries will be continued. For my part, I would like to cooperate as much as possible in spite of its difficult financial situation, in light of Japan's prosperity being achieved in the context of world stability."
