Prime Minister Naoto Kan held a meeting of the Ministerial Council on the Sinking of the ROK Naval Patrol Vessel at the Prime Minister's Office.

In the opening address, the Prime Minister said, "I recognize the sinking of the ROK Naval patrol vessel as being a major issue of security for Japan as well. In response to this sinking of the ROK Naval patrol vessel and the subsequent developments, Japan has been taking necessary measures, such as reinforcing information gathering and ensuring thorough patrols and surveillance, while cooperating with the international community. As uncertainties still remain concerning this issue, we need to keep up various measures, including risk management, without fail to thoroughly ensure the people's safety and security, into the campaign period for the House of Councillors elections to be held soon. Also, collaboration with the international community, including the response at the United Nations Security Council and particularly the strengthening of Japan-US-ROK cooperation, will continue to be important. I would also like to take the opportunity of the upcoming G8 and G20 Summits in Canada to confirm with US President Barack Obama and ROK President Lee Myung-bak that the three countries will unite their efforts to address this issue."
