Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended the 10th meeting of the Advisory Council on the Management of the National Archives and Other Matters at the Cabinet Office.
At the meeting, an explanation was given on the management of electronic national archives, and hearings with experts, among other participants, took place on work to transform historic official documents and other materials into electronic media and to preserve them digitally. Participants also discussed the schedule for compiling and issuing their final report.
Prime Minister Fukuda said, "I see the National Archives as the venue where the Government actively provides information it possesses to the people. The archives represent the very foundation of democracy. As such, they must serve as an institution that discloses truths to the people. I hope the archives will develop in a way that will enable people a hundred and even a thousand years from now to learn about Japan's history."
