Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended a joint meeting of the Government and Ruling Parties Council on a Comprehensive Measure for Pursuing Life Security and the Ministerial Meeting on Economic Measures held at the Prime Minister's Office, and decided on the Comprehensive Measure for Pursuing Life Security.

The Comprehensive Measure is centered on three goals to ensure a sense of reassurance and safety for the people in the face of the global surges in crude oil and food prices, and the hikes in the cost of daily essentials. The three goals are: dispelling of anxieties over livelihood; acceleration of the transition to a "sustainable society"; and transition to a new price structure and strengthening of growth. By establishing these goals, Prime Minister Fukuda intends to implement countermeasures to further strengthen the Japanese economy in the future and in a manner even more preemptive and determined than before.

Prime Minister Fukuda said, "The Comprehensive Measure is clearly distinct from the traditional economic package as they are intended to maintain the basic strategy of realizing economic growth through reforms and further strengthening the Japanese economy, and to consolidate financial resources for truly necessary measures under the strategy to restore fiscal health. I ask each and every Minister to ensure that the measure will be implemented in a truly effective manner."
