Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the 21st meeting of the Global Warming Prevention Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office.
At the meeting, the members of the Headquarters discussed a draft Action Plan for Achieving a Low-carbon Society and the status of progress of the Kyoto Protocol Target Achievement Plan.
The draft Action Plan was compiled as a concrete roadmap for Japan to shift to a low-carbon society, based on the ideas elaborated in Prime Minister Fukuda's speech on June 9, entitled "In pursuit of 'Japan as a Low-carbon Society,'" and on the proposal made by the Council on the Global Warming Issue on June 16.
In his concluding address, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "At the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, we were able to support the negotiations on a post-Kyoto Protocol framework such as in the form of the G8 agreement on seeking to adopt the long-term goal to address the climate change issue as a goal of the entire world. The Action Plan for Achieving a Low-carbon Society, which is to be decided at today's Cabinet meeting, is the first concrete step. I ask each Minister to further accelerate your efforts in your respective jurisdictions to make a shift to a low-carbon society."
