Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda received a report at the Prime Minister's Office from participants of the Youth Summit for Environment in Kobe 2008 held in May, and talked with them in a friendly atmosphere. Among the items received by the Prime Minister was a message, compiled by the Youth Summit participants from 21 countries, for him to send out at the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit.

A sideline event of the G8 Environment Ministers Meeting, the Youth Summit for Environment was also held in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and was hosted by the Ministry of the Environment, Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe City, and a private sector executive committee that included a specified non-profit organization. At the Youth Summit for Environment, the participants from 21 countries exchanged opinions on the future of the Earth and environmental issues, and adopted a declaration.

After receiving a courtesy call from participants of the Youth Summit for Environment, the Prime Minister enjoyed viewing a Tanabata Tree with strips of paper on which people wrote their wishes for the Star Festival placed in the entrance hall of the Prime Minister's Office.
