Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended the Award Ceremony for the Energy Conservation Contest FY2007, held at a hotel in Tokyo by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of the Environment, and other organizations.

The contest is held to recognize actions by households and schools to save energy and evaluate the effectiveness of such actions, with the aim of making the energy saving effort of the household sector, in which energy demand is growing particularly strong, a national movement, and increasing the motivation to save energy, thereby reducing CO2 emissions as part of countermeasures to global warming.

There were 10,409 contest entries from households and schools nationwide, and the Prime Minister's Award was conferred on each one of the top winners of the respective sectors.

Prime Minister Fukuda said in his address, "Your advanced efforts make you energy saving leaders and advocates. It is important that you share your thoughts with a wider circle of people, including your neighbors and people in your communities. The Government will take initiatives to act in line with your efforts."
