At the meeting, the two leaders agreed to make efforts for the early conclusion of an agreement for cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, aiming to achieve further cooperation and advancement in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including the development of uranium mining in Kazakhstan. Having reached the basic agreement on negotiations to conclude the tax treaty, Prime Minister Fukuda and President Nazarbayev shared the view that the two countries will continue to cooperate in promoting regional cooperation in Central Asia. On the climate change issue, President Nazarbayev indicated his support for Japan's Cool Earth Promotion Programme, and the leaders concurred on the cooperation to create an effective framework in which all the main carbon emitters participate. Afterwards, the two leaders signed a joint statement. In the joint press announcement, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Today's meeting provided us with a good opportunity to confirm our intention to build future-oriented bilateral relations. I am convinced of further developments in Japan- Kazakhstan relations."
