Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of the Global Warming Prevention Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda instructed Ministers to advance works in their respective jurisdictions for the Cabinet to decide upon, by the end of July or so, an action plan for achieving a low-carbon society. This instruction was given in response to proposals compiled by the Advisory Panel on the Global Warming Issue at their meeting on June 16.
Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Achievement of a low-carbon society is a comprehensive task that involves not only environmental issues but also encompasses the economy, energy, science and technology, agriculture and forestry, as well as tax, financial, and social policies. It requires undertakings by the Government as a whole. It is also essential that all the people, with the understanding of the importance of achieving the low-carbon society, participate in the undertakings. As such, we must develop a national campaign to gain the people's cooperation. Under the leadership of each Cabinet member, I would like to see to it that the ministries and agencies actively work to develop innovative technologies and address such issues as trial implementation of emissions trading."
