Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the 6th meeting of the National Commission on Social Security at the Prime Minister's Office.

The Commission members held discussions at the meeting on the draft outline of a mid-term report, in line with the results of deliberations conducted thus far at the Commission's meetings as well at the subcommittees'.

One of the opinions expressed by a Commission member was that "countermeasures against the declining birthrate are an investment for the future and the foundation of the system of social security, including pensions and medical and nursing care services." Another opinion expressed was that "the fact that the people are leading longer lives is something we should truly appreciate. The medical and nursing care services have contributed to the longevity of the people. Increasingly, people are enjoying longer lives and that is all the more reason why a reform in the social security system is necessary. Let us approach this issue with a positive mind: it is a worthy challenge." The mid-term report is to be compiled by the end of this month.
