Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of the Government and the Ruling Parties Council on the Review of the Medical Care System for People Aged 75 and Over at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the meeting, a report was made on the outcome of the checkup of the implementation status of the medical care system for people aged 75 and over, and the Council decided to review the measure to alleviate burdens to allow for smooth operation of the medical care service for the elderly, among other items. It was confirmed that the Government will continue cooperating fully with local governments and explain thoroughly to the people the purpose and necessity of the system, in an effort to gain their understanding and to put the system on the right track. This decision was based on the awareness that a mechanism to disperse the medical costs of the elderly generation among the entire nation is essential to safeguard health care services for the elderly.

Prime Minister Fukuda said, "The Government sincerely accepts criticisms and will take prompt measures to implement items compiled today, in coordination with broad-area associations and municipalities, which are responsible for actual works under the system, in order to operate the system from the standpoint of the elderly."
