Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda received joint statements toward the G8 Summit from Dr. Ichiro Kanazawa, President of the Science Council of Japan, at the Prime Minister's Office.

The joint statements were compiled toward the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit by the Science Council of Japan and other science academies in the G8 countries as well as in Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa, as their recommendations to the national leaders of countries participating in the G8 Summit. Points raised in discussion at the G8 Academies' Meeting, convened in March of this year in Tokyo, were reflected in the joint statements, which were then presented to the leaders of respective countries on June 10 and announced simultaneously around the world.

Taking the themes of climate change and global health -- the subjects on agenda of this year's G8 Summit -- the joint statements urge governments to take actions such as supporting research on greenhouse gas reduction technologies and climate change impacts, stating that responding to climate change requires both mitigation and adaptation to achieve a transition to a low carbon society and global sustainability objectives.

Prime Minister Fukuda said, "I will ensure that thorough discussion on climate change and global health will be conducted toward the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit."
