Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held talks with His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Gul, President of the Republic of Turkey, at the Prime Minister's Office.
At the meeting, the two leaders shared the view that Japan and Turkey will develop a firmer and more dynamic relationship in order to work together to address various international issues that the international community faces. On global environmental issues, they agreed to participate actively in building an effective post-2012 international framework. President Gul welcomed Japan's Cool Earth Promotion Programme and expressed his support. Moreover, the leaders of the two countries confirmed their intention to continue cooperating toward the resolution of nuclear and missile issues and the North Korean abduction issue, among others, and exchanged opinions on the economy, culture, and tourism, making it a wide-ranging and future-oriented meeting.
After the meeting, the two countries announced the Joint Statement Between Japan and the Republic of Turkey. At the joint press conference that followed, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "On this occasion of President Gul's visit to Japan, we were able to make a joint statement at the summit level, for the first time. The tradition of good Japan-Turkey relations has been enjoyed for more than a century. Based on the joint statement that we announced today, I would like to further strengthen our bilateral relations."
