On the second day of the 4th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended the High-Level Panel Discussion on "Facing the Challenges and Opportunities of High Food Prices" in Yokoyama City, which was co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), and spoke about food assistance in response to the global food shortage and rising food prices, and about next year's crop planting measures.
Afterwards, Prime Minister Fukuda participated in a plenary session of TICAD IV, "Expanding Partnership," in which globally prominent individuals known for their involvement in African development made presentations on their respective activities, including Bono, the activist singer of the group U2, and Ms. Wangari Maathai, former Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kenya and the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner.
After the plenary session, Prime Minister Fukuda received a courtesy call from a group of leaders of major United Nations organizations and other officials, and attended a reception co-hosted by the Japan-AU Parliamentary Friendship League, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Nippon Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
The Prime Minister also had separate meetings with four of the dignitaries participating in TICAD IV, in addition to 11 African national leaders, and exchanged opinions with them.
