Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the 4th meeting of the Council on the Global Warming Issue at the Prime Minister's Office.

Discussions took place at the meeting on a draft medium-term report, which was submitted by two Council members and is to be finalized in June.

Regarding the work toward the finalization of the medium-term report, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Global warming is a comprehensive policy issue in that it affects a range of areas, including the way people live their lives, town-building, transportation, energy, and the economy. It is a major issue with a global impact. I do appreciate it very much that the Council held its discussions from that perspective. Each country asserts its own position on this issue, and it is necessary that we reconcile these various opinions. The G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit will serve as a prime opportunity for such work. I am determined to compile a solid recommendation that will enable us to exert our leadership and bring together varying opinions at the G8 Summit."
