Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended the International Symposium: From Okinawa to Toyako: Dealing with Communicable Diseases As Global Human Security Threats, which was held in a hotel in Tokyo, and delivered his address.
This symposium is held to discuss global health cooperation mainly on the three major infectious diseases and the role of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund), which was established following the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit in 2000, in global health cooperation.
In the opening session, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Supporting all the people around the world battling AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria and endeavoring to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) lead to the attainment of human security, which Japan values greatly. From this viewpoint, I am pleased to announce that Japan will be contributing 560 million dollars to the Global Fund in the coming years. We expect that this contribution will enable the Global Fund to continue and expand its activities, resulting in great many lives being saved."
