Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the 4th meeting of the National Commission on Social Security at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the meeting, the Commission members exchanged opinions on medical and nursing care services, countermeasures against the declining birthrate, ways to realize work-life balance, and modalities of public pensions and income security for elderly people, among other matters, and Mr. Yoichi Masuzoe, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, provided an explanation of the medical care system for people aged 75 and over.

In concluding the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "We will complete the intensive monitoring of the implementation status of the medical care system for people aged 75 and over by June 13, the day when the insurance premiums will be withheld for the second time under this system. We will take whatever measures necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the system. The Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare is also fully prepared to take such measures in cooperation with the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, including strengthening the management of broad-area associations comprised of prefectures and municipalities. I also believe that we need to ask those from various sectors who helped design the system for their efforts to establish the system. In so doing, we must make our utmost efforts so that the people understand the purpose and function of the system."
