Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda met with Mr. Litokwa Tomeing, the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda welcomed President Tomeing on his first visit to Japan, and stated that he wished to strengthen the good relations that the two countries have developed in areas such as fisheries. To this, President Tomeing expressed his view that he would like to further solidify the good bilateral relations of the two countries.

At the meeting, the leaders discussed the climate change issue and the Japan-Pacific Islands Forum Summit Meeting (PALM) that Japan will host next year, among other topics. President Tomeing stated that he highly evaluated Japan's initiatives in the area of climate change. In response, Prime Minister Fukuda said that Japan was actively working on building an effective international framework through the Cool Earth Promotion Programme, indicating that such efforts by Japan would lead to the reduction of damage in the Marshall Islands and other island nations, which are seriously impacted by climate change.
