At the meeting, the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy was decided, which stipulates the basic policy for ocean measures that cover the period up to FY2012, as well as the government's comprehensive measures to be conducted in a systematic manner. The Basic Plan sets three policy goals: to take initiative in the efforts to address ocean issues involving the whole of humanity; to build a foundation for sustainable use of abundant marine resources and marine space; and to make a contribution with regard to the ocean to maintain the safety and security of the people's lives. In line with the Basic Policy, the government will strategically promote ocean policy, and make efforts to achieve sound development of the Japanese economy and society, and to enhance the stability in the people's lives. |
