At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda welcomed President Garcia on his visit to Japan and said, "The President's visit to Japan is of great significance as we enter a new era of friendly, cooperative relations between our countries. Peru holds the chairmanship of the 2008 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, and accordingly, I wish from my heart that Peru will successfully accomplish the tasks assigned to the chair country." In response, President Garcia expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome. At the meeting, the two leaders discussed matters such as their bilateral relations, and agreed to further enhance cooperation to address environment and climate change issues, among cooperation in other areas, and to initiate negotiations toward the conclusion of an investment agreement between the two countries. Afterwards, they signed the Joint Statement on Enhanced Cooperation in Environment and Climate Change Issues between Japan and the Republic of Peru. At the joint press announcement made after the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "With regard to environment and climate change issues, President Garcia highly evaluated the Cool Earth Promotion Programme, a proposal that I made in January of this year. In light of this, we were able to sign a joint statement that stipulates the two countries' enhanced cooperation in the areas of environment and climate change. This is the first joint statement that Japan announced after making the proposal of the Cool Earth Promotion Programme." To this, President Garcia stated that, "I am convinced that Japan's international activities in the area of environment will greatly contribute to humanity. Peru will extend as much support as possible to Japan's position in the international community and to activities that Japan conducts in the area of environment." Related link:
