Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended a meeting of the Advisory Council on "Rural Areas Revitalizing" held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

This Council is tasked with promoting the creation of rural communities characterized by aspiration, a willingness to explore ideas and an ability to act independently. To this end, the Council designates, presents and spurs on pioneering community-building initiatives built around the sound management of self-sustaining agricultural, forestry and fishery practices.

At the start of the session, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Thank you for joining the meeting today. I am grateful that a number of experts are here with us, as well as for the attendance of those of you who have traveled long distances from where you are involved in the agricultural, forestry and fishery industries. Our commitment to the "Rural Areas Revitalizing" is aimed at actively supporting these efforts and expanding them on a nationwide basis, instead of keeping them restricted to prefectural levels. I would appreciate your contributions to fruitful discussions that can be referred to in the government's efforts toward regional revitalization."

At the meeting that followed, the Council members exchanged opinions with the people working to vitalize their own rural communities around the country. Also at the meeting, model cases of "Rural Areas Revitalizing" were selected from the 111 entries solicited by the government in FY2007.
