Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the meeting of the Council for Promoting Consumer Policy at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the meeting, reference papers were submitted by the council members to illustrate the current situations of consumer-related issues and to present modalities of consumer administration. The papers elaborated on the issues hampering the prevention of the spread of damage, referring to incidents such as the recent case involving frozen dumplings. Problems of the current consumer administration were pointed out, including those of insufficient information networking and those that concern the provision of remedies, that suggest the tendency to prioritize business interests over consumers. Based on these points, the Council proposed the establishment of a new organization focused on consumers that can truly fulfill its functions and exert its authority through consolidation of the contact services, information and authorities, along with the Government's effort to put consumer interests before business ones.
Concerning contact services for consumers, council members pointed to difficulties the people face in accessing and using such public contact services, among other problems related to the contact operations. In response, the Council proposed the launch of a unified contact service that consumers can rely on and promotion of a unified information resource, among other initiatives.
