Japan-Israel Summit Meeting

At the meeting, the two leaders expressed their satisfaction on the steady development of political relations between the two countries, and confirmed their common resolve to further strengthen bilateral ties by enhancing dialogue and cooperation at all levels. They also shared the understanding that further development of economic relations would be the driving force for enhancing the Japan-Israeli partnership, and agreed on enhancing cooperation in the fields of science and technology, as well as on the need to further strengthen their friendly relations, given that the year 2012 will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Furthermore, concerning cooperation on the Middle East peace process and the Corridor of Peace and Prosperity initiative, the two leaders reaffirmed that resolution of the Arab-Israel conflict would contribute to achieving stability and prosperity in the Middle East region. Prime Minister Olmert expressed his gratitude for Japan's active contribution to the Middle East peace process and aid to Palestinians. In response, Prime Minister Fukuda expressed his strong support for the ongoing Israel-Palestine negotiations that had resumed at the Annapolis Conference, held in November 2007, toward concluding a peace treaty, and announced that Japan was prepared to provide aid necessary to the peace efforts.
