Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the 12th general meeting of the Education Rebuilding Council at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

The Council had conducted a fundamental review of the modality of education in Japan, and compiled proposals in each of the three reports. At the meeting, Mr. Ryoji Noyori, the Chairman of the Council, handed to Prime Minister Fukuda the Council's final report, entitled, Education Rebuilding by Society as a Whole -- Toward Ensuring its Effectiveness.

In his address, the Prime Minister said, "I would like to thank all the members of the Council, who have carried out intensive discussions over the period of one year and four months since its establishment in October 2006. Today I received the Council's final report, and I acknowledge the importance of putting the final report's proposals into action. Accordingly, the government will take the final report seriously, and ensure that proposals are carried out and followed up so that the results of your discussions are fully reflected in policy. We also intend to establish a new council within the Cabinet that will succeed the Education Rebuilding Council, as a forum for the Cabinet to sincerely address the education rebuilding issue. Once again, I would like to extend my appreciation to you for your cooperation."
